Four More Sign Up - 2012 Looks All Wright

Warwickshire’s 2012 title challenge began to take shape this week as Director of Cricket Ashley Giles made Chris Wright his first close season signing.
The tying up of Wright, who has signed a permanent three-year deal, is welcome news as the former Essex paceman was something of a revelation in the latter part of last season – taking 22 wickets after his loan move from Essex.

I will admit to being one of, I suspect, many Bears fans who didn’t quite know why we had signed Christopher Julian Clement Wright to give him his full name, but a five-for on her debut at Headingley soon proved me wrong.

With Neil Carter seemingly on the wane, and Chris Woakes likely to be on England duty more and more over the next few years, the signing of an experienced paceman was vital.

It now remains to be seen whether Wright can carry on his form – so far the only thing he has done wrong is admit to being an Arsenal fan!

Elsewhere Chris Metters, Steff Piolet and Laurie Evans have all agreed terms on new deals.

Metters impressed on occasion in his first year with the club and Evans likewise showed flashes of potential with the bat both for The Bears when called upon and for his club side Moseley in the early part of the campaign, with one memorable century saving a game against Kidderminster Victoria. His fielding prowess saw him used as twelfth man by England during the historic India test.

Piolet is a slightly different case, and I confess to being surprised at his extension. The 23-year old has managed just three First Class games in his time – and whilst this might not tell the whole story - just 18 wickets in 19 one day games at an economy rate of nearly six.
